    • After studying this unit you will be able to:

      1. work on your delivery in terms of adjusting your voice, posture and movement in order to sound enthusiastic and confident;
      2. remain relaxed when speaking, not allowing stage fright to control you;
      3. successfully deal with questions from the audience.

      1. When listening to speeches (at work or at university), do you usually get the feeling that the speaker is addressing you personally? Why? Why not?
      2. When listening to other people talk in public, can you tell if they are battling stage fright? How?
      3. How do you overcome the nervousness associated with speaking in public?

      1. Almost 80% of people get a little nervous before speaking in public. About 10% are happy speaking in front of the audience while the other 10% are terrified of the activity, according to Devin Bramhall, CEO at Animalz (quoted after Anderson, 2017.)
      2. The fact is that we are not really afraid of public speaking. We are afraid of failing in front of everyone. However, when we are the audience, we do not want to see anybody fail, especially in public.
      3. “…That fear we experience is adrenaline-based. That means that it’s unpleasant but not debilitating. And with a little work, we can turn those butterflies to our advantage,” according to Nick Morgan. (Forbes)

      Now that your speech is prepared, you need to concentrate not just on the wording of your speech but also on the delivery.
